Maldives: What you need to know!

I recently returned from the Maldives and got a lot of questions about my trip! I thought it might be useful to share some practical insights for anyone considering this incredible destination. While it’s known for its turquoise waters and overwater villas, there are a few important details that make all the difference when planning your trip. (Hint: it's not as easy as it looks to just show up!)

Getting There

Most international flights arrive into Malé (MLE). From there, travelers connect to their resort by either speedboat (30–60 minutes) or seaplane (45–60 minutes). These transfers are strategically coordinated and must align with your flight arrival times. It seems a bit complicated, but their system somehow works!

Resort Islands

Each resort occupies its own island, which means your choice of property really shapes the entire experience. Options range from ultra-luxury private retreats to more family-friendly resorts.

Many offer both overwater and beach villas. Overwater for the classic Maldives feel, and beach villas for more space and easier access to the sand. Choosing the right resort is imperative!

Best Time to Visit

Peak season runs from December through April, when the weather is driest. May through November brings lower rates and fewer crowds, though there’s a higher chance of rain. Having said this, it barely rained when we were there in September!

Activities & Experiences

Snorkeling and diving are world-class, with reefs and marine life accessible right from many resorts. The reef was one of the healthiest I have ever seen!

Water sports, sunset cruises, and spa treatments are also widely available.

Dining is typically half-board, full-board, or all-inclusive, depending on the property.

Good to Know

The Maldives is a Muslim country. While resort islands are relaxed, modest attire is required if you’re passing through Malé or local islands.

Alcohol is only available on resort islands.

Seaplane transfers only operate during daylight hours, so late-night arrivals may require an overnight stay in Malé.

If the Maldives is on your travel list, I’d be happy to walk you through which resort is the best fit for your style—whether you’re looking for romance, family fun, or wellness-focused relaxation. There are a lot of nuances with this destination, so I can help!
