Introducing “Noctourism”

After-Dark Adventures Worth Staying Up For

There’s a new trend lighting up the travel world, Noctourism, and it’s all about discovering destinations after the sun goes down.

From cooler temperatures and fewer crowds to some of the most magical, offbeat experiences imaginable, nighttime travel opens up a whole new side of the world. Whether you're an adventurer, foodie, or culture-seeker, these after-dark experiences are turning night owls into global explorers.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to travel by moonlight:

Chase the Northern Lights
Standing in the snow, completely still, watching the sky swirl with green and purple, it’s something you never forget. In places like Iceland or Finnish Lapland, some lodges will even give you an “aurora wake-up call” so you don’t miss the show.

Nocturnal Wildlife Safaris
The first time I went on a night game drive in Africa, I was surprised by how different everything felt. Cooler air, total darkness except for the tracker’s spotlight, and animals you’d never see during the day like porcupines, civets, and big cats on the move.

Night Scuba & Snorkeling
At night, the ocean transforms. In Hawaii or the Maldives, you can snorkel or dive among glowing plankton, spot octopuses waking up, and see coral that looks like it’s breathing. It’s incredibly peaceful, albeit a little scary!

Night Skiing & Snow Adventures
Night skiing is the coziest kind of thrill. Fewer people, freshly groomed runs, and floodlights casting the snow in a soft glow. Some resorts even offer snowshoeing or sledding by lantern light. Switzerland, Japan, and Utah all do this really well.

Museum Nights & Cultural Pop-Ups
Visiting a museum at night feels like a secret. Places like the Louvre, the Vatican Museums, and the Acropolis Museum open up for evening hours, and it’s a whole different experience with no lines, no noise, just you and the art.

Late-Night Street Food Scenes
Some cities really don’t come alive until the sun goes down. I’m thinking of smoky food stalls in Seoul, midnight pad Thai in Bangkok, or grilled octopus at Lisbon’s Time Out Market. If you’re a night owl (or just a foodie), it’s worth staying up for.

Stargazing Experiences
If you’ve ever been to a true dark-sky destination, like the Atacama Desert in Chile or Wadi Rum in Jordan, you know how humbling it is. With a guide and a telescope, you can see entire galaxies, planets, and more stars than you thought possible.

Moonlit City Tours
Even familiar cities feel brand new at night. I love biking through places like Kyoto or Barcelona after dark with cooler air, quieter streets, and views you’d never notice during the day. Stop for a drink on a rooftop!

Evening Mosque & Temple Visits
Temples and mosques take on a really special kind of energy in the evening. The lighting, the quiet, the scent of incense in the air. It’s a beautiful way to slow down and soak up a destination’s soul.

Whether you're escaping the heat, avoiding daytime crowds, or just looking to experience a destination in a totally new light, noctourism might just be your next favorite way to travel!
